Engineering Coincidence: Part 1

I want to follow a theme over the next few posts. I have long had an interest in why it is that some people seem to experience more opportunities and coincidence in their lives than others. I’ve never been satisfied with the idea that it is purely down to chance… there seems to be a characteristic difference between people to whom the universe seems to give in abundance and those to whom it does not.

I believe this difference is one of attitude, expectation and attention, and over the next few months I want to share some thoughts, and some practical techniques, toward experiencing this abundant nature yourself.
One of the characteristics of people who seem to attract beneficial coincidence is that they expect, and welcome, the unexpected. Now, coincidence as a word simply refers to two events occurring simultaneously. What really interests us here is *meaningful* coincidence. What interests us further is meaningful and *beneficial* coincidence. When coincidences happen, in order to benefit one must be ready and willing to exploit the opportunities that arise. One must be living a life within which one expects the unexpected.

There are two reasons for this. First, if one is phased or thrown off guard by the unexpected, then one is not relaxed. And relaxed people are smarter people. Smarter people make better decisions. And better decisions lead to better exploitation of resources.

The second reason is one of *direction of attention*. Whatever one believes about the various Law of Attraction theories being marketed currently, it *is* a simple fact that one gets more of that which one attends to. A pessimist sees a glass half empty and thinks on to the totally empty glass… an optimist sees a glass half full and all the opportunity and pleasure that comes with it. The same event, worlds apart.

So, lets make this personal. What is *the unexpected* to you? Is it a friend, an opportunity, excitement? Or something to be concerned about, feared, avoided? I would like you to think for a moment about the language you use to describe unexpected events…

“It came out of the blue.”

“I didn’t see it coming.”

If it helps, just take a sheet of paper and write a few of these down.

Close your eyes and just ask yourself, how do you represent *THE Unexpected* in its most general form… what comes to mind? a feeling? a sound? an image, symbol? Where is it, this representation? When you attend to it more intently, what (if anything) changes?

Now, if you have the space, I would like you to move over to where that representation is and simply step into the unexpected… if not, simply draw the unexpected to you. Draw it around you like a favourite piece of clothing and just notice how comfortable you can be. Welcome it into every fibre of your being. Embrace it, and just give yourself a few minutes to experience whatever it is you experience.

I hope this simple little exercise gives you some interesting new experiences. I would of course be delighted to receive any emails regarding any experience you may have, both with the exercise and afterwards.
